How to Prepare Reading Comprehension for SSC, Bank, Railway, and Other Exams

Reading Comprehension is asked in school/board exams and various competitive exams such as SSC, Bank, Railways, Teaching, NDA, MBA, etc. In the reading comprehension test, questions are asked based on the short passages. Each passage generally contains five questions in competitive exams. You need to read the passages carefully and choose the best answer to each question out of the four alternatives. It is considered to be one of the high scoring sections. This section tests your vocabulary and understanding of the English language. The questions asked in the reading comprehension are not direct and easy nowadays, they are inference based. There can be more than one conclusion for the questions asked. However, a good reader always scores 100% in this section.

How to score maximum in Reading Comprehension

* First of all, go through the questions and options. Make sure you understand it and what you are going to look for in the passage. It will help you to look at the required information and will save your precious time.
* Focus on keywords after reading the questions and options. You need to avoid the words, phrases, and sentences which are not required to answer the questions.
* In case of any confusion, read the entire passage as quickly as you can. Avoid depending on the half information.
* While reading passages, make sure you understand or find what the writer is talking about, the main idea of the passage, and the tone of the author of the passage. It solves 50% questions of the passages.
* If a question is asked on a phrase given in the passage, make sure you read not only the sentence that contains the phrase, but also read the sentences above and below the phrase. It gives the clear meaning of the phrase.

Notes:

* No need to spend much time on a particular question, if it is taking time. Move to the next question and review it in the end if time allows.
* Remain calm during the test.
* Make a habit of reading. Read articles/newspapers/novels etc. It’ll help you learn new/commonly used words and also, help you understand different tones and points of view of the writers.
