“Limited Partnership”
The geographically selective Congress-Left alliance is difficult to implement
The Congress-Left Front alliance for the Assembly election in West Bengal is notable (प्रसिद्ध/उल्लेखनीय ; important and deserving attention, because of being very good) for several reasons, though not unexpected. Both have been cooperating at the national level for several years now, and were partners in the recent Assembly election in Bihar.

The CPI(ML), which was part of the ‘grand alliance (महागठबंधन; a large group of political parties who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims)’ in Bihar, is not part of the alliance in West Bengal. The Congress and the Left Front (वाम मोर्चा; an alliance of political parties in West Bengal formed in Jan. 1977) argue, and perhaps even believe, that the election will not be a straight contest between the AITMC led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the BJP.
Both the Congress and the Left Front are staring at extinction (विलोपन /विलुप्ति होना; a situation in which something no longer exists or vanishes) in the State, caught in the crossfire (दोनो तरफ से बन्दूकों का चलना/गोलीबारी; bullets fired from different/both directions) of the intense battle between the BJP and the AITMC.

The alliance is an effort to salvage (बचाना/उबारना; to try to make a bad situation better) what is left of their support base and consolidate their meagre resources (अल्प संसाधन ; very small or not enough resources). The downslide (मंदी/कमी; decline or fall) of the Left Front did not end with its ouster (निष्कासन/निकाल देना; to force someone to leave a position of power, job, or competition) from power in 2011 after 34 years.
Rising from the ashes (राख; the grayish powder left after burning of a substance) of the Left Front was AITMC, but the shallowness (उथल-पुथल/उथलापन; the fact of not showing serious or careful thought) of its politics was soon apparent (स्पष्ट; seeming to be true). The BJP rose even more dramatically, winning more than 40% of the votes and 18 Lok Sabha seats in the State in 2019.
An argument in support of the Congress-Left Front alliance is that those who rallied (रैली/प्रदर्शन; to come together to support, especially to support a particular opinion or party) behind the BJP and the AITMC in recent years because they dislike the other more will have a new alternative now.

However, that scenario (परिदृश्य; a situation or description of possible actions or events in the future) of a return of voters and workers to the Congress and Left Front appears too optimistic (आशावादी; a belief that something good will happen). More likely, the impact of the alliance will be restricted to constituencies (निर्वाचन क्षेत्र; one of the official areas of a country that elects someone to represent it in a parliament or legislature) that have a considerable Muslim population.
A second claimant (दावेदार; a person who asks for something that he believes belongs to him) for the anti-BJP votes in around one-third of the total 294 constituencies could significantly aid (मदद करना; help or support) the Hindutva party’s bid (बोली/दाम; an offer of a particular amount of money for something that is for sale) for power. The alliance leaders do not consider Ms. Banerjee any less an enemy than the BJP. An element of personal rivalry (प्रतिद्वंद्विता/प्रतिस्पर्धा; a situation in which people, businesses, etc. compete with each other for the same thing) is evident, but the Congress and the Left Front may also be hoping to emerge as a viable (व्यवहार्य/करने योग्य; able to work or succeed as intended) anti-BJP platform in the State, following the eviction (निष्कासन; to force someone to leave a place) of Ms. Banerjee from power.

At present, however, the alliance is more a sign of confusion than a strategy for resurgence (पुनरुत्थान; a new increase of activity in a particular subject or idea that had been forgotten for some time) for both the Congress and the Left Front. Cohabitation (सहवास; the state of living or existing at the same time or in the same place) will not cure the structural and ideological (वैचारिक/सैद्धांतिक; based on a particular set of ideas or beliefs) disabilities of either or change the environmental factors.
In fact, this alliance in West Bengal could aggravate (बिगाड़ देना; to make a bad situation worse) the troubles for both in Kerala, where they will be principal opponents in the Assembly election. The BJP has made significant inroads (पैठ/पकड़ बनाना; to make direct and noticeable effects on something) in the State, which was evident in the recent local body elections.
The geographically selective alliance of the Congress and the Left Front is difficult to implement on the ground, and might end up opening new avenues (रास्ते; a method or way of doing something) for the BJP.
