“Smouldering Unrest”

becoming worse
अशांति; disagreements or fighting
between different groups of people)
Inequitable (अनुचित; not fair) labour-capital relations could hit India’s investment destination credo (a set of beliefs that influences the way you live)
On Saturday, global personal technology major Apple placed all fresh production orders on hold for its Taiwanese supplier Wistron. This embargo (प्रतिबंध; an order to temporarily stop something, especially trading or giving information) may affect all Wistron units, but the trigger (प्रेरक; to cause something to start) was one of the biggest expressions of industrial unrest in India in recent years — at a new facility set up by the firm in Kolar, Karnataka, to manufacture iPhones, among other things.

Violence broke out at the unit on December 12 after several workers raised slogans (नारा/नारा लगाना; a short, easily remembered phrase used to describe the character of something, especially a political idea or a product) protesting against nonpayment of their dues, a protest that escalated (गंभीर बनाना; to make or become something more serious). In Kolar, Wistron claimed ₹437 crore of damages from the incident even as the Centre and the State government reacted with alacrity (तत्परता; speed and eagerness), given the importance of the project for India to establish its credentials (प्रत्यय/परिचय पत्र; documents that state the abilities and experience of a person, country, etc.) as an alternative manufacturing base to China.
The State said it was disturbed and around 160 people were arrested. The Centre asked the B.S. Yediyurappa administration for an expeditious (शीघ्र; quick) inquiry to identify the culprits and ensure that investor sentiment (विचार/भावना; a thought, opinion, or idea based on a feeling about a situation) is not affected due to the ‘one-off (एकबारगी; happening only once) incident’.
Frequently Asked SYNONYMS With Hindi Meanings
The Prime Minister has been reported to be ‘very worried’ about the development, and all necessary support has been promised so that the firm may restart operations. That may take a while now given that Apple’s own probe (जांच; to fined or discover information by asking a lot of questions) has found glaring lapses (जबरदस्त खामियां; (of something bad) very or highly obvious failures) in Wistron’s treatment of its staffers.
From playing victim initially, Wistron has been compelled (मजबूर/मजबूर करना; to do something, because you are forced to or feel it is necessary) to change tack (तरीका/नीति; an approach to dealing with a situation or problem; a course of action or policy) — it now claims the damages from the violence were about ₹50 crore and has fired a top official handling its India operations for failing to ensure employees got their entire dues in a timely manner.

Perhaps, if designated officials for hearing labour grievances (शिकायत/व्यथा ; a complaint or a strong feeling that you have been treated unfairly) had reacted adequately (पर्याप्त रूप से; in a way that is enough or satisfactory for a particular purpose) when Wistron’s 1,300odd regular staffers or its 8,000 odd contract workers at Kolar raised a red flag about wages, this may not have come to pass.
If anything, enforcement (प्रवर्तन/ लागू करना; the process of making people obey a law or rule) of labour laws for employees’ benefit will make India an even more attractive and contrasting alternative to China where labour exploitation is rife (प्रचलित; something unpleasant, but very common or happens a lot).
With global firms under pressure to exhibit (प्रदर्शन करना; to show something publicly) higher standards in environmental, social and corporate governance, India also needs to up its game on enforcing compliance (अनुपालन; the act of obeying an order, rule, or request) with the laws of the land and treating labouremployer disputes in an evenhanded (समान व्यवहार करना; treating everyone fairly and equally) manner.

When a showcase project becomes an exemplary (आदर्श/अनुकरणीय; very good and suitable to be copied by other people) basket case within months, for whatever reasons, the repercussions (नतीजों; the effect that an action or decision has on something, especially a bad effect) are deeper and wider. With the country on the cusp (नोक; the dividing line between two very different things) of a new labour law regime (नियम/शासन व्यवस्था; a particular way of operating or organizing a system, an economy, etc.) being marketed as a business-friendly regimen, misgivings about their provisions (प्रावधान/नियम; a law that a particular thing must happen or be done) or unresponsive systems for employees’ grievances can only foment (उत्तेजित करना/भड़काना; to cause trouble to develop) more such unrest.
